The Secret to Stansell's Success

In 2014 Stansell Electric set out to achieve its purpose in a profound way – Grow Our People, Serve Our Customers and Build Our Communities. We had 75 years of experience on our side, a strong market ahead of us, and a talented group of people on board, but weren’t clear on how to reach this end goal. 

 

Enter Team Trek. After our first call, I knew we had found our partner. In January 2016, 11 leaders set off on a journey that would show us how big the mountain was ahead of us, challenge us to lead with excellence, and help us develop a road-map for building a high-performance culture.  Over the last 3 years, the “scoreboard” has taken care of itself:

 

  • Reduction of our safety incidents by 80%

  • A customer NPS score that is leading the industry

  • 200% profitability achievement

  • And most importantly, a team with 93% retention. 93% of our team members are choosing to stay here in an industry that is plagued with high turnover and low availability of skilled trades!

 

What's our secret? Extending trust to Team Trek, holding ourselves accountable to 100% Responsibility, and having a clear and simple mission. Sounds easy, right? It is... and it isn’t.

 

The first step – 100% Responsibility. We committed (I committed) to a 5-year strategic goal of implementing the 1) Clear and Simple Mission 2) the Active Engagement Model and 3) the High Performing Team Model. 

 

The second step – we followed the Culture Change Playbook from Team Trek:  

 

  • See the entire organization as a system – You Bet! 

  • Align the leadership team – We started this in Arkansas when ALL leaders spent a week together and committed to the plan. 

  • Create an organization compass – Got one! Employees sign it when they get back from Tea m Trek. 

  • Model the way – This is HARD! We communicated the expectation, admitted we are imperfect people, asked people to hold us accountable, and try every day to be a bit better than the day before.

  • Promote active engagement – We defined it, we talk about it, we teach it, and we provide feedback as needed. 

  • Expand the core – 68 people have been through the experiential learning center program, and we'll send 16 more in the spring. The goal is 100% of people with at least six months of tenure go! 

  • Form a compass team – Got one and they ROCK!

  • Launch the compass – It is launched… it is on our walls, in our halls, on our mouse-pads, laminated and carried to meetings. It is – everywhere! 

  • Develop a coaching culture – This takes time, energy, facing fear, and engaging in healthy conflict. We host a culture refresh workshop every spring with the leadership team to remind ourselves how far we have come and what great looks like. We also utilize the Team Trek Leadership Model. The first step, awareness of self, is the KEY! Dick Wells says in 16 Stones, if you cannot lead yourself, you cannot lead others. You may be able to boss them, but you can’t lead them. Team Trek is teaching us how to lead self. 

  • Develop a training program – We engaged a Team Trek Facilitator every quarter to come and deep dive on one topic with everyone who has been to the Learning Center. That is three to four 4-hour sessions to cover everyone. It is that important!

  • Talent Management and Succession planning – We use performance measures, rewards, 9 block and strong succession… people want to know where they stand.  

 

We consider Team Trek our partner as much as we do our customers and suppliers. Extend trust and watch what happens!
